Cross is Coming

August may still be the midst of summer for many, but for cyclocross nuts, it means one thing. Cross is coming! With only a month left before racing starts, it’s a crucial time of year. Time to get the bike out, the tires glued, and get out doing some laps because within a few weeks it will be time to line up for that first race. The pre-season brings a couple of summer races as well as a lot of local cross practices. Here’s what’s going down this August:

A Mid Summer Cross Race

This year brings a few summer surprises. First up we have a summertime cross race held by the Mid Island Velo Association / Cross on the Rock on August 9th.  It’s at an old COTR venue which hasn’t been used in a number of years, but I’m told it’s a great course. The limited spots are selling like hot cakes. When writing this post, there was only one coveted spot left:

Hastings Grass Crit

Vancouver Cyclocross Coalition is kicking things off early this season with the Hastings Grass Crit at the Hastings Raceway. Miss ‘n Out style grass crits on the interior oval, 90 racer maximum, qualifiers for the final event, live broadcast, food, beer, music. Sounds like a great event. Registration is live:!/events/hastings-grass-crit

Steed Cycles Cyclocross Clinic

Steed Cycles is hosting two cyclocross clinics this summer. Sunday August 7th and Sunday August 14th. Great for those looking for an intro to the sport, or for anyone wanting to brush up on their skills. For more info:

Broad Street Cycles Cross Skills Clinic

Broad Street Cycles is starting up their skills clinic on Aug 17 and will run for 3 weeks. Definitely worthwhile if you live in the Victoria area. For more info:

I’m on the Island and signed up for the MIVA race. Excited to get a race in and maybe find out where I’m lacking. Gear, fitness, techniques or whatever. It will be a good test.
