Cyclocross season is on the not so distant horizon, and with the upcoming season brings some exciting changes at theholeshot.ca. After a 19 years hiatus, I’ve finally made good on my threat to move back to the island. Mid July we will be loading up our the kids, the dog, and all our worldly possessions (which some crazy people might say includes a few too many bikes) in a U-Haul and are off to start a new chapter of our lives in the Comox Valley.
What prompted this move? Having grown up on the island, I’ve always wanted to move back. It’s not that I feel a particular obligation to move back the place I’m from, but there is something about the island that has always drawn me back. Great riding, surf, skiing, slower pace of life, the opportunity to raise my kids in a smaller town. It all sounds pretty good to me. Sure I could also go on about the insanity that is the real estate market in Vancouver, but there has been enough written about that. For us it all came down to timing. With the kids being young, and the portable nature of my job, it seemed like an ideal time to go for it. Thankfully there is a great cyclocross scene over there (one of my criteria in any place we would move) so I can keep on with this crazy obsession of mine.
So what does this mean for theholeshot.ca? Well, I’m going to keep on racing as much as I can and continue writing about the amazing races that we have in BC. I love cyclocross and I think we have something pretty special here. While the site has always been a bit Vancouver centric, it may have more of an island slant now. Those mainland races are only a ferry ride away though, and I’m going to do my best to make it to every one. My goal with the site has always been to make a positive contribution to the local cyclocross community, and I hope to continue to do that in a new location. I would like to try to expand that to cover more races in more areas, but to do that, I’ll need some help. If you want to contribute and stories, race reports, or anything else cyclocross related, drop me a line. I’m always looking for guest posts.
For now it’s time to get all packed up, settled into a new place, and try to squeeze in a few intervals here and there. Cross season will be here before we know it.
See you at the races.
